Bermuda reinsurers report Q3: Arch earns $1.03bn, RenaissanceRe posts $161m loss on bond marks

Arch Capital reported third-quarter net income of $1.03 billion, down from $1.34 billion a year earlier, as catastrophe losses rose and underwriting income fell. RenaissanceRe reported a net loss of $161.4 million as rising market yields drove down its fixed-income values, with $879.8 million of net realised and unrealised investment losses. RenaissanceRe's underwriting income was $426.1 million, and it raised $152.6 million of third-party capital, mostly through its Lighthouse Cat Bond Fund.

Why it matters. The two results show that investment-portfolio valuation and catastrophe losses, not underwriting alone, drive reported earnings. That volatility shapes the capital available for technology and data investment. Finance and risk leaders at carriers should expect scrutiny of how mark-to-market swings are explained to boards and rating agencies.
