AI in Bermuda

Bermuda AI Guide By Jorai Laurenceo Last Updated

Artificial intelligence in Bermuda is moving from pilots to policy. The Bermuda Monetary Authority is consulting on AI guidance for financial services, the Government has an AI policy and an AI partnership for public services, and PIPA governs AI that uses personal data. This is the complete guide to AI in Bermuda: regulation, adoption, the organizations involved, and the independent research behind it, from Laurenceo, Bermuda's AI governance think tank.

Is AI Regulated in Bermuda?

Bermuda has no standalone AI law. AI is governed through existing law and sector rules, and the picture is filling in quickly:

  • Financial services. The Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) published a discussion paper on the responsible use of AI in July 2025, a stakeholder letter summarising the feedback in February 2026, and on 14 August 2026 a consultation on a proposed Guidance Note, with feedback due by 30 October 2026. The proposal applies existing governance, risk, conduct, cyber, outsourcing and AML expectations to AI rather than creating a new licensing regime. It is built on eight principles and five outcomes, including adequate evidence for supervisory review.
  • Privacy. The Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (PIPA) came fully into force on 1 January 2025 and applies whenever an AI system uses personal information. Bermuda's Privacy Commissioner has also signed the Global Privacy Assembly's joint statement on AI-generated imagery.
  • Government use. The Government of Bermuda's Artificial Intelligence Policy covers how its own employees and consultants use AI, including human review of AI decisions that affect people and compliance with PIPA and PATI.

Where AI Is Used in Bermuda

Insurance and reinsurance. Insurance and reinsurance sit at the centre of Bermuda's economy, and that is where AI matters most. A BMA survey of AI and machine learning use, reported in 2022, found adoption across the market still low but with most insurance groups already using AI or machine learning and more planning to (Reinsurance News). Underwriting, claims, catastrophe modelling and AML are the uses the BMA's papers return to.

Financial services more broadly. Banks, investment firms, digital asset businesses and corporate service providers all fall within the BMA's proposed guidance.

Public services. The Government's partnership with NEAR AI begins with a secure AI assistant to help public servants with administrative work involving sensitive data.

Skills. Workforce programmes, from the Government's AI Education Series to Bermuda College's AI Foundations course, are building practical AI skills.
