CISA adds exploited Apple pointer authentication bypass CVE-2024-27834 to KEV after Russia-linked campaign report

Cybersecurity Laurenceo Intelligence CISA / Apple · United States

Attackers are monetising the gap between patch release and patch deployment, and a medium CVSS score is a poor guide to real-world risk when a flaw is chained into a campaign. Organisations with mixed Apple, Chrome and Safari fleets should verify patch status against the KEV list rather than severity scores. Device management teams should treat KEV entries as the priority queue.

What Happened

CISA added CVE-2024-27834, a medium-severity (CVSS 5.5) improper authentication flaw in multiple Apple operating systems, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. The flaw allows an attacker with arbitrary read and write capability to bypass Pointer Authentication. The addition follows a Sekoia report that threat actors possibly linked to Russia exploited previously patched Safari and Chrome vulnerabilities to deliver malware that harvests browser and device data. Federal civilian agencies are advised to patch by 18 November 2026.

Why It Matters

Attackers are monetising the gap between patch release and patch deployment, and a medium CVSS score is a poor guide to real-world risk when a flaw is chained into a campaign. Organisations with mixed Apple, Chrome and Safari fleets should verify patch status against the KEV list rather than severity scores. Device management teams should treat KEV entries as the priority queue.
