TSMC reportedly drafts plans for 3D DRAM memory production at Nvidia's request
A TSMC move into memory would threaten the incumbent memory makers and extend one foundry's reach over the AI hardware stack, where memory supply is a binding constraint on data centre build-outs. Memory suppliers, hyperscaler procurement teams and policymakers concerned with supply-chain concentration should watch for confirmation, a site decision or an acquisition. The reports are unconfirmed and describe early drafts, so planning should treat this as a scenario, not a commitment.
What Happened
Bloomberg, citing a report by The Information, says TSMC is considering broadening its business to include advanced memory chip manufacturing. TSMC recently began drafting plans for 3D DRAM at the request of Nvidia, its biggest customer, according to two people familiar with the plans. The Next Web, citing Reuters, adds that TSMC could build new factories or buy an existing plant and convert it. This would put TSMC in competition with Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron.
Why It Matters
A TSMC move into memory would threaten the incumbent memory makers and extend one foundry's reach over the AI hardware stack, where memory supply is a binding constraint on data centre build-outs. Memory suppliers, hyperscaler procurement teams and policymakers concerned with supply-chain concentration should watch for confirmation, a site decision or an acquisition. The reports are unconfirmed and describe early drafts, so planning should treat this as a scenario, not a commitment.
