BMA warns public of scammers impersonating the Authority to obtain banking details
Bermuda's banks, trust companies and other BMA-regulated firms are exposed to a fraud pattern that borrows the regulator's own authority, and customers will bring these calls to their institutions first. Firms should update frontline scripts, customer notices and staff training now to state that the BMA never requests banking details, and log reported incidents for referral. Regulator impersonation is a template that can be reused against any jurisdiction's supervisor.
What Happened
The Bermuda Monetary Authority said it has been made aware of outreach to members of the public from an individual purporting to act on its behalf. The person is requesting banking details and/or saying that bank accounts will be frozen. The BMA said these calls are not legitimate, that it will never request personal banking details by telephone, e-mail or any other channel, and that anyone contacted should speak to their bank and consider reporting the matter to the Bermuda Police Service.
Why It Matters
Bermuda's banks, trust companies and other BMA-regulated firms are exposed to a fraud pattern that borrows the regulator's own authority, and customers will bring these calls to their institutions first. Firms should update frontline scripts, customer notices and staff training now to state that the BMA never requests banking details, and log reported incidents for referral. Regulator impersonation is a template that can be reused against any jurisdiction's supervisor.
The Bermuda Angle
The warning comes from the BMA itself and concerns impersonation of the Bermuda regulator. Regulated financial institutions should reflect it in fraud awareness and customer communications, and direct affected customers to their bank and the Bermuda Police Service.
