Meta warns election backlash will make data centre build-out harder as 40 of 41 ballot measures go against

Local permitting is becoming the binding constraint on AI capacity, and a hyperscaler executive is now saying so publicly. Developers and power buyers with capacity concentrated in states weighing pauses, Texas above all, should diversify sites and lock in grid access earlier. Compute pricing and capex timing will increasingly follow political geography rather than chip supply alone.

What Happened

Meta president Dina Powell McCormick told the WSJ Tech conference on Wednesday that the Democratic wins will make it much harder for companies to build data centres. She said the industry had not explained the benefits of these investments well enough. Reuters Breakingviews reports that of 41 data centre ballot measures voted on this week, all but one went against server farms, according to Ballotpedia. It also cites research firm Cleanview as saying governor-backed data centre pauses account for 41% of planned capacity, with Texas the biggest threat.
