Ransomware attack takes down systems across all 66 Queens Public Library branches

Cybersecurity Laurenceo Intelligence Queens Public Library · United States

A single compromise of a shared network can take down every site of a distributed service operator at once. Public-sector bodies and multi-site operators with lean security budgets should segment networks and rehearse continuity plans that keep customer-facing services running while IT is offline. The source does not name the attackers or say whether data was stolen, so the data exposure question remains the one to watch.

What Happened

NY1 reports that a ransomware attack has disrupted services across the Queens Public Library system, which first reported a systemwide network outage on Wednesday. The outage affected its website and app, checkout and return machines, renewals, on-site computers and free Wi-Fi at all 66 branches, and as of Thursday morning library president and CEO Dennis Walcott said those services were still unavailable. Locations remained open as scheduled, and the library said it would not charge late fines during the outage.
