Drax, Brookfield and Radiant plan 1GW-plus AI data centre at Yorkshire power station
Power access is becoming the scarce asset in UK AI infrastructure, and owners of existing generation and grid connections now hold real leverage over where capacity is built. Data centre developers without secured connections, and utilities with surplus sites, should reassess their positions against this model. The next signals are whether the initial phase reaches financial close and whether other generation sites follow.
What Happened
Drax, Brookfield and Radiant, Brookfield's UK-headquartered AI infrastructure platform, announced a partnership to develop, deliver and operate gigawatt-scale data centre capacity at Drax Power Station. The initial 100MW phase could receive up to £2.5 billion of backing. Brookfield estimates total investment could potentially exceed £20bn.
