Alliant Energy targets 1 GW of further data-centre contracts within six months, raises capex plan 19%
Data centre demand is converting into multi-year utility commitments, which supports grid and infrastructure investors but ties delivery to utility build schedules. Hyperscalers and developers should plan around interconnection timelines that run to 2029 to 2031, not around chip availability alone. Regulators and ratepayers will scrutinise who funds the build-out.
What Happened
Reuters reported that Alliant Energy's finance chief said the utility expects to sign contracts for about 1 gigawatt of additional data-centre demand within six months. That load would add to the 3.4 GW already contracted with Google, Meta Platforms and QTS Data Centers, and is expected to ramp between 2029 and 2031. Alliant raised its 2027 to 2030 capital expenditure forecast by 19% to $15.9 billion and expects peak system demand to rise by more than 60% by 2031.
