Arch Capital CIO warns of 'incestuous' AI data centre financing at Bermuda reinsurance conference
A large insurance investor naming circularity and off-balance-sheet structures as a resilience risk puts the credit quality of AI infrastructure debt on the agenda for every long-duration balance sheet. Insurers and reinsurers holding data centre paper should test concentration to a small group of hyperscaler counterparties and look through to who ultimately backs the cash flows. Watch for this concern to appear in investment committee limits and regulatory stress testing.
What Happened
Christine Todd, chief investment officer of Arch Capital Group, told the Women in Reinsurance Conference at the Hamilton Princess that hyperscalers rely heavily on returns from investments in competitors and on complex, mostly off-balance-sheet vehicles to finance data centre construction. She described the circular nature of the AI financing ecosystem as an underappreciated risk to market resilience. Nearly 300 delegates attended.
