AWS growth accelerates to 39% as Amazon holds 2026 capex near $220bn and guides above 40% for 2027-28
A multi-year growth commitment above 40% on a $184 billion run rate locks in the infrastructure build-out, which sets demand for chips, power and data centre capacity through 2028. Suppliers, utilities and data centre lenders are exposed to this schedule, and the guidance becomes a benchmark against which rival hyperscalers will be judged. Enterprises planning AI workloads should assume compute supply keeps expanding, but at hyperscaler-set terms.
What Happened
AWS revenue rose 39% in the third quarter to about $46 billion, with operating income of $17.8 billion and an annual revenue run rate of $184 billion. CEO Andy Jassy projected AWS revenue growth above 40% in both 2027 and 2028, and Amazon said it expects 2026 capital expenditure of about $220 billion. Group revenue was $201.9 billion, up 12%, with net income of $20.7 billion ($1.89 a share).
Why It Matters
A multi-year growth commitment above 40% on a $184 billion run rate locks in the infrastructure build-out, which sets demand for chips, power and data centre capacity through 2028. Suppliers, utilities and data centre lenders are exposed to this schedule, and the guidance becomes a benchmark against which rival hyperscalers will be judged. Enterprises planning AI workloads should assume compute supply keeps expanding, but at hyperscaler-set terms.
