METR's first assessment puts Anthropic's acceleration at 1.9x, just under the 2x threshold, with AI use in AI R&D as the main likely driver.

On 7 November 2026, Laurenceo raised its forecast that METR will publish an evaluation stating a central estimate of at least 2x overall acceleration of AI capabilities progress by 30 September 2027, from 33% to 50%. A 2x figure that sits only inside a confidence interval does not count toward resolution.

Why It Moved

METR estimates a 1.9x acceleration in Anthropic's benchmark progress and judges that most of it is likely due to Anthropic's AI use in its own R&D 1. METR also says there is significant uncertainty and that other causes likely played a large role in late 2025 3. Laurenceo considers that a rising share of AI in AI R&D makes a follow-up reading above 2x plausible within the window. Against this, the estimate is lab-level rather than tied to a single model, and a repeat high-access evaluation needs lab cooperation and may not publish before the deadline. METR's own developer uplift studies found no speedup in 2025 to early 2026, which keeps the measurement question open.

The main near-term signal is METR's predeployment evaluations of the next frontier models, which could show whether the 1.9x reading holds or rises toward a central estimate of 2x. A result below that level, or a finding that other causes account for most of the gain, would push the forecast back down.
