What happens next, by when, and how sure we are

Probability is how likely an outcome is by its deadline. Confidence, shown as bars, is how strong the evidence behind that number is. Estimates move only when verified evidence does, and every question is scored when it resolves.

ForecastsFrontier models

Will DeepSeek publicly release a model named DeepSeek-R2 by 2027-03-31?

Laurenceo estimate: 24% (Unlikely) by March 31, 2027. Last updated November 2, 2026.

How it resolves

Resolves YES if, on or before 2027-03-31, DeepSeek releases a model officially named DeepSeek-R2 (or R2 with a suffix), through its app, API or public weights. Resolves NO otherwise.

Reasoning

DeepSeek has never published an R2 date and has shipped the V4 line instead (V4 and V4-Pro from April 2026, V4-Pro generally available in August, V4.1-Flash in September). Reporting links the R2 delay to training problems, and DeepSeek may fold reasoning into the V line.

Evidence

  • Against. DeepSeek R2 had not been released as of 13 October 2026, with no announced date and no R2 repository or model card. Decode the Future
