General-purpose AI model
Definition
A general-purpose AI model is a model trained on broad data that can perform a wide range of tasks and be built into many downstream systems. Large language models are the main example. The EU AI Act sets transparency and copyright duties for their providers, and extra duties for models with systemic risk.
Why It Matters
Most enterprise AI is built on a small number of these models, which concentrates dependency and supplier risk.
