Nvidia unveils prefabricated DSX pods and waterless data centre specifications
If the deployment claim holds in practice, construction stops being the main limit on AI capacity, and power, grid interconnection and permitting become the decisive constraints. Waterless designs could ease local opposition in water-stressed regions, but they do not remove the electricity question. Operators and investors should judge AI site strategies on megawatts secured, not on build speed.
What Happened
At GTC Berlin, Nvidia unveiled containerised data centre modules called DSX pods. Starting in 2027, Nvidia and its partners will offer Vera Rubin rack systems in them fully plumbed, wired and ready to deploy, and The Register reported Nvidia's claim that the modules could cut deployment time from six months to two weeks. Nvidia also published DSX specifications for waterless data centres that use closed-loop coolants and dry coolers instead of cooling towers.
Why It Matters
If the deployment claim holds in practice, construction stops being the main limit on AI capacity, and power, grid interconnection and permitting become the decisive constraints. Waterless designs could ease local opposition in water-stressed regions, but they do not remove the electricity question. Operators and investors should judge AI site strategies on megawatts secured, not on build speed.
