GlobalFoundries signs $2bn, five-year deal to make CoWoS silicon interposers for TSMC in New York

Advanced packaging is one of the binding constraints on AI accelerator supply, and a US-based interposer source reduces concentration risk in that chain. The 2028 ramp means it does nothing for near-term compute scarcity. Infrastructure planners should treat it as a medium-term resilience signal, not a pricing relief.

What Happened

GlobalFoundries has entered into a $2 billion, multi-year agreement with TSMC to supply silicon interposers for TSMC's CoWoS advanced packaging ecosystem in the US. GF will add fabrication capacity at its Malta, New York facility. The agreement has an initial five-year term and a framework for future expansion, with volume production expected to begin ramping during the first half of 2028.

Why It Matters

Advanced packaging is one of the binding constraints on AI accelerator supply, and a US-based interposer source reduces concentration risk in that chain. The 2028 ramp means it does nothing for near-term compute scarcity. Infrastructure planners should treat it as a medium-term resilience signal, not a pricing relief.
