Anthropic launches Claude Haiku 5.5, saying it costs about 75% less on average to run than Haiku 4.5
A large cut in the cost of the small-model tier changes the economics of agentic workflows, where many subagent calls can dominate total spend. Teams should revisit routing policies so that classification, retrieval and support tasks run on the cheapest model that meets quality thresholds, reserving larger models for planning and judgement. Business cases rejected on inference cost in earlier budget cycles may now be worth re-running.
What Happened
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October for high-volume, cost-sensitive work such as summaries, database queries, classification, subagent tasks, live customer support and browser use. Anthropic says it costs around 75% less to run on average than Haiku 4.5, and it is available on all platforms, including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. It follows Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 in the Claude 5.5 family.
Why It Matters
A large cut in the cost of the small-model tier changes the economics of agentic workflows, where many subagent calls can dominate total spend. Teams should revisit routing policies so that classification, retrieval and support tasks run on the cheapest model that meets quality thresholds, reserving larger models for planning and judgement. Business cases rejected on inference cost in earlier budget cycles may now be worth re-running.
