New estimate puts US data centre and AI infrastructure investment at $10.3 trillion from 2025 to 2032
Investment on this scale concentrates exposure among lenders, insurers, utilities and equipment suppliers, whose returns depend on sustained AI demand. A nominal financial commitment behind a multibillion-dollar project is a warning that announced capacity and funded capacity are different things. Counterparties should examine the collateral and offtake terms behind each project rather than accept headline figures.
What Happened
In a Brookings Institution paper published on 23 September, economist Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh of Columbia University projects that investment in data centres and related AI infrastructure will total $10.3 trillion from 2025 to 2032, a build-out he says would be larger relative to the economy than the major US canal, railroad, electrification, highway and telecommunications booms. Separately, Utility Dive reported that a 1.8 GW, $20 billion data centre planned by PowerHouse Hillwood was underpinned by a $1 letter of credit.
