Anthropic releases Claude Sonnet 5.5 at unchanged API prices, adding cyber safeguards to its mid-tier model
The gap between the vendor's per-task savings claim and the independent max-effort result shows that unchanged token prices say little about actual spend. Buyers should benchmark cost per completed task on their own workloads and effort settings before migrating. Security and engineering teams should also test whether the new cyber safeguards trigger fallbacks on legitimate work such as vulnerability research, code review or incident response tooling.
What Happened
Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September, days after introducing its higher-end Opus 5.5. The company says the model generates output more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and can cost up to 30% less per task, while API prices stay at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. It is the first Sonnet model to launch with cyber safeguards and fallbacks of the kind developed for more capable models, and it is available on all platforms, including AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, although Artificial Analysis' max-effort test found a higher task cost than Sonnet 5.
Why It Matters
The gap between the vendor's per-task savings claim and the independent max-effort result shows that unchanged token prices say little about actual spend. Buyers should benchmark cost per completed task on their own workloads and effort settings before migrating. Security and engineering teams should also test whether the new cyber safeguards trigger fallbacks on legitimate work such as vulnerability research, code review or incident response tooling.
