NTT Data in final talks to build Anthropic's first dedicated Japan data centre, Nikkei reports

The deal is not yet confirmed, but it suggests frontier labs are moving from renting general cloud capacity towards dedicated, country-specific builds. For enterprises in Japan and the wider region, local frontier capacity could ease data residency and latency constraints that have held back some regulated deployments. A partial opening in 2028 means current procurement decisions should not assume this capacity will be available.

What Happened

Nikkei Asia reported, citing multiple sources, that NTT Data Group is in the final stages of talks to build a data centre in Osaka Prefecture for Anthropic. The facility could cost up to $6.3 billion, have up to 500MW of capacity and partially open in 2028, with the companies aiming to finalise the agreement by the end of fiscal 2026. DatacenterDynamics noted that Anthropic has signed agreements for at least 14.8GW of compute capacity since October last year.
