Anthropic releases Claude Haiku 5.5 and halves Sonnet 5.5 cache-read pricing

Frontier AI Laurenceo Intelligence Anthropic · Global

Agent workloads repeatedly re-read long contexts and call many subtasks, so cache pricing and small-model rates shape total cost more than headline prices for flagship models. Enterprises should revisit their model routing, sending routine extraction, classification and subagent steps to smaller tiers, and re-run business cases for automations previously rejected on cost. Availability across the three major clouds also makes it easier to adopt under existing procurement and data-residency arrangements.

What Happened

On 7 October 2026, Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, a small model for high-volume, cost-sensitive work, which it says costs around 75% less on average to run than Haiku 4.5. The model is available on the Claude Platform, AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, and SiliconANGLE reported pricing of $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Anthropic also halved Sonnet 5.5 cache-read prices, which it says makes most agentic work on that model about 20% cheaper.

Why It Matters

Agent workloads repeatedly re-read long contexts and call many subtasks, so cache pricing and small-model rates shape total cost more than headline prices for flagship models. Enterprises should revisit their model routing, sending routine extraction, classification and subagent steps to smaller tiers, and re-run business cases for automations previously rejected on cost. Availability across the three major clouds also makes it easier to adopt under existing procurement and data-residency arrangements.
