FortiMail zero-day CVE-2026-104286 under active exploitation; CISA sets a three-day federal deadline

Cybersecurity Laurenceo Intelligence Fortinet / CISA · Global

An email security gateway sits in the path of every inbound and outbound message, so a compromise there threatens confidentiality and trust across the organisation, not a single system. Without a patch to apply, security teams should restrict access to management interfaces, look for unexpected files or configuration changes, and treat any internet-exposed FortiMail appliance as a possible compromise until it has been checked. Boards should expect the federal deadline to set the pace that regulators and cyber insurers use when judging how quickly a known exploited flaw was handled.

What Happened

CISA added CVE-2026-104286, a Fortinet FortiMail path traversal vulnerability, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog on 1 October 2026, citing evidence of active exploitation. Fortinet's advisory says the flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker to write arbitrary files to the underlying system using crafted HTTP or HTTPS requests, affecting FortiMail 8.0.0 to 8.0.1, 7.6.0 to 7.6.6, 7.4.0 to 7.4.8 and 7.2.0 to 7.2.9. Fixed versions had not been released at the time of reporting, and US federal civilian agencies were given until 4 October to address the flaw.
